Used in as many as 35 million U.S. homes and buildings from the 1940’s-1990’s, vermiculite was a popular attic insulation used due to its lightweight and fire-resistant nature.

Why is Zonolite dangerous?

Zonolite Insulation is the brand name of attic insulation sold between the 1940s and 1990s which consisted of the naturally occurring mineral vermiculite. It had a pebble-like texture and was typically gray-brown or silver-gold in color. The vermiculite used in Zonolite has been reported to contain Tremolite Asbestos, which is known to be 10 times more carcinogenic then the typical Chrysotile Asbestos. Homes with asbestos-laced insulation could yield mild to moderate asbestos exposure over many years.

What can be done?

Removing Zonolite as a do-it-yourself project should not be attempted because the material contains such high amounts of asbestos.
